A Brief History of Eric Alan Berg

Eric Alan Berg was born in Indiana, PA, in 1960 and attended schools in Pennsylvania and Florida before graduating from New College of the University of South Florida in 1982 with a B.A. in humanities. He obtained his J.D. in law from University of Santa Clara in 1985.
While still a college student, he worked for the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund of Kentucky investigating grave sites and their relationship to strip mining. In 1983, he worked for Legal Services of Santa Clara County defending poor people against evictions and supporting their efforts to gain government benefits. In 1984, Berg worked for the Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office interviewing jail inmates and preparing their defenses for their lawyers.
Upon graduation from law school, he was hired by the Shasta County Public Defender’s Office and for three years helped defend poor persons charged with misdemeanors or felonies. In 1988, he moved to Southern California and worked with the Imperial County Public Defender’s Office and, later, the San Diego County Public Defender’s Office.
In 1990, he returned to Northern California and founded the private law firm now known as Berg & Associates, with offices in Redding and Chico. During the ensuing years, he has diligently and aggressively represented defendants in a wide variety of criminal law cases, such as marijuana cultivation and possession for sale, child molestation, rape, grand theft, fraud, drunk driving, spousal abuse, and murder. He has also been active in civil matters, such as divorce and child-custody proceedings.
Berg is a member of both the State Bar of California and the American Bar Association. In addition, he has met the exacting standards of the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization to be named a Certified Criminal Law Specialist. His law firm, Berg & Associates, has been a leader in medical marijuana patients’ rights and has been involved in land-breaking cases related to the use of this medicine.
Eric Berg was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania in 1960. He attended the Indiana University of Pennsylvania University School until the 6th grade. In the 7th grade, he moved with his family to DeLand, Florida. In 1975, at the age of fifteen years, he became an Eagle Scout. He spent five full summers as the Ecology Department Director, Quartermaster, and Zookeeper at Camp La- No-Che in Paisley, Florida.
At New College in Sarasota, Florida, in 1982, he was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in the humanities after studying philosophy, poetry, Cicero, and Catullus, and was top in his class in Latin. He wrote his thesis on understanding myth as a key to education using the liberation philosophy of Paulo Friere.
In 1980, Mr. Berg worked for the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund of Kentucky, investigating grave sites and their relationship tostrip mining.
In 1983, Mr. Berg worked for the Legal Services of Santa Clara County, defending poor people against eviction and in their fight to gain government benefits. He also was a librarian for the University of Santa Clara Law School.
In 1984, Mr. Berg worked for the Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office interviewing inmates in the Santa Clara County Jail and preparing their defenses for their lawyers.
In 1985, Mr. Berg graduated from the University of Santa Clara with his Juris Doctor degree. He was hired by Frank J. O’Connor, the Shasta County Public Defender. He started as the supervising misdemeanor deputy and worked defending poor people charged with misdemeanors, as well as felonies, until 1988.
In 1988, he defended poor people charged with crimes for the Imperial County Public Defender in El Centro, Brawley, in Calexico.
In 1989, he began working for the San Diego Public Defender. There, he defended children and adults charged with serious felonies in the adult and juvenile courts.
In 1990, he returned to Redding, California, and founded the private law firm now known as Berg & Associates, which has been advocating for citizens for 28 years in Northern California, including Shasta, Butte, Tehama, Trinity, Humboldt, Siskiyou, Modoc, Lassen, Sacramento, and Yolo Counties.
In these 28 years, Mr. Berg has tried hundreds of jury trials with victories where cases were dismissed and clients were found not guilty of charges of child molestation, gang rape, murder, marijuana cultivation, marijuana possession for sale, drunk driving, grand theft, fraud, assaulting and brandishing a weapon at a police officer, duck poaching, turkey baiting, and spouse abuse.
